What a joy to bring two more men onto our diaconate this past Sunday!

The office of deacon is an office marked first and foremost by service. Godly men are called by God and gifted to fill this office. We first see the office in the New Testament churchin Acts 6. Men were selected from among the members of the church“…men of good repute, full of the Spirit and wisdom…” (Acts 6:3) to make sure that the resources of the churchwere properly distributed to those in need, particularly the widows. It was originally the responsibility of the apostles, but they needed to focus on the preaching of the gospel and the work of service was becoming overwhelming. So their work was delegated to those men we now call deacons.

Deacons are just one more indicator of God’s love for the Church. He knows our needs and he gives deacons to each congregation so that the church is well organized to meet those physical and financial needs of her members. When the deacons are about their work, they are about the work of God. The love shown by the deacons is the love of God being shown through them.

Adding deacons to the work this week is a tangible indicator that God knows All Saints is here. He knows our work. He knows our needs. He knows our flaws. And he is faithfully at work to address each of those things. What a wonderful, awesome, and loving God we serve!

Your fellow servant of Christ,
