“Jesus is King” indeed, and if he is able to rescue and redeem those of us worshipping at All Saints in Brentwood, he is equally capable of bringing Kanye West from death to life. Praise God for this profession of faith!

Are you skeptical? That’s fair. As I think of my own spiritual walk, I can think of many who could rightfully be skeptical of my personal testimony of faith, but my walk doesn’t take place on an international stage with my life’s work available for all to search on YouTube and Instagram. I also don’t live in a culture and work in an industry that stands in blunt, vocal opposition to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Are you exuberantly anticipating the Third Great Awakening under Kanye’s leadership? Slow down. Remember, we have been bitten by dramatic and high-profile conversions before, and Scripture makes it clear that some seed grows quickly only to be scorched by the sun (Matthew 13:5–6).

How, then, should we honor and celebrate this profession? With prayer. Unless you run in Kanye’s circles and have an opportunity to disciple him, your prayer for him, his family, his church, and his sphere of influence is critical for his growth and future ministry.

The Apostle Paul charged Timothy with discipling those in his care to grow in their faith and understanding. “The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” He goes on to warn Timothy, “Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions” (I Timothy 1:5–7).

Kanye is expressing language of repentance and faith in the saving work of Jesus. May he grow in sincere faith, understanding, and grace as he continues on this journey. It is thrilling to consider the light that could shine in dark places because of his celebrity status. In our enthusiasm, let us always remember this is the Spirit’s work, and God delights to answer the prayers of his people. Let’s be faithful to pray for the amazing ways God chooses to grow his kingdom!
