“Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD his God…” Psalm 146:5

As all of us wait to find out who our next president will be, I want to remind you of the simple truth that we are subjects of the King in heaven; our King who laughs in derision at the nations while they rage against him and against his Messiah, Jesus (Psalm 2). This doesn’t mean that the presidential election doesn’t matter. It does matter. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t real reasons to be worried about the state of the union. It doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer in this world and groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8).

It does mean, though, that we should not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul (Matthew 10). And no matter how important presidential elections seem, they do not change for a moment that our Father in heaven knows what we need. Christ teaches us not to be anxious - after all, who can add a single hour to his life by being anxious (Matthew 6)? Our Father not only knows our need, but delights to give good gifts to his children (Matthew 7; James 1).

So, whatever the coming days (or weeks!) bring in terms of a decision. Don’t despair if allseems lost because your candidate lost. Don’t rejoice if all seems secure because your candidate won. Our hope is in the Lord!

Your fellow servant of Christ,
Pastor Matt
